In the United States there are two sets of financial laws and regulations that govern people working in finance. One set applies to people who sell financial products. Those people are traditionally employed in securities brokerage houses, and insurance companies. As sales people, they are contractually obligated to place the interests of their company ahead of the interests of their clients.
The second set of laws and regulations applies to people who are registered as investment advisers with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) or comparable state regulators. Registered Investment Advisers are legally obligated to place client interests before their own. When an adviser meets those standards, they are considered a fiduciary. A fiduciary is not only expected to be dedicated to the best interests of their clients, they also must adhere to a higher standard of professional competence.

It is one thing to analyze and offer advice. It is quite another to help clients follow through with the behavior changes necessary to implement our advice. We provide consistent nudging to help our clients to do what they need to do to improve their financial situation. We believe this is a critical ingredient for client financial success.
